Summary

Lead with PM-specific experience (even if short), product type, and one quantified achievement. If transitioning from another role, state your background and connect it to PM.

Example

Product Manager with 1 year of experience building B2B SaaS tools for SMBs. Led feature discovery and launch of an onboarding flow that improved Day-7 retention by 18%. Background in software engineering with hands-on experience in user research and A/B testing.

  • Keep it to 3-4 lines
  • Include product type and customer segment
  • One metric minimum

Work Experience

Each role needs: a one-line company description, your scope, and 3-5 bullets following the pattern: action verb + context + metric + timeframe. For non-PM roles, reframe bullets to highlight product-adjacent contributions.

Example

Identified drop-off in onboarding through funnel analysis, redesigned the first-run experience with engineering, and improved activation rate from 32% to 48% within 2 months.

  • Add a one-line company description for context
  • Lead with your strongest metric bullet
  • Non-PM roles: show problem identification and outcome, not just tasks

Skills

Focus on tactical PM skills you have actually used: discovery, requirements, metrics, user research, wireframing, A/B testing. List tools you work with daily. Remove anything you cannot discuss in an interview.

Example

Product Discovery, User Research, A/B Testing, SQL, Mixpanel, Figma, Jira, Agile/Scrum

  • Only list skills demonstrated in your bullets
  • Tactical skills matter more than strategy at this level
  • 6-10 skills is enough

Education

Keep it brief. Institution, degree, year. Remove GPA if graduated 3+ years ago unless it is above 3.8/4.0. Add relevant coursework or projects only if you lack PM work experience.

Example

B.Tech Computer Science, PES University, 2024

  • One line per degree
  • Notable institutions add credibility — keep them visible
  • Remove GPA after 3 years unless exceptional

Common mistakes at the junior level

Describing tasks without showing your thinking

"Managed the backlog" is fine as context, but add what made your approach different. "Prioritized 30+ feature requests using customer feedback, shipping the top 5 that addressed the biggest activation gap" shows PM judgment.

Hiding transferable experience

If you were an engineer, designer, or analyst before PM, those roles have PM-adjacent value. Reframe them: problem identification, user understanding, cross-functional work.

Expecting senior-level scope

Feature-level ownership IS the expected scope for junior PMs. You do not need cross-org influence or product vision. Show you can ship a feature end-to-end with a measurable result.

Overloading the skills section

20 tools listed with no evidence in your bullets hurts credibility. Keep 6-10 skills you can discuss confidently.
